Why Don't Girls Generally Like Video Games As Much As Boys?

Starr-Butt, 2007-10-01 19:49:30
Generally speaking, girls don't. And I don't think it's necessarily an exposure thing (And if it is, only to a small degree) because in my experience girls that are equally exposed to video games just don't take interest in it. They just don't. My sister doesn't and she sees me play games all the time. She even has her own games that she plays once in a blue moon. Same throughout my family and all of my friend's families. So why don't girls like video games? (Generally- have to add that generally or this will turn into a politically correct forum of nothingness with no answers)Lots of good answers so far!

  • I'm one of the girls who loves video games.
  • And they rather spend money on clothes or something.
  • Don't quote me on any of this, of course.
  • I think it almost might be because a lot of games they see involve blood & gore, and that's just not for them.
  • They're more interested in other things, I guess.

2007-10-01 21:07:50 Ward-Wildman wrote: well i think the first reason is because they dont really know how to work the controls to get a feel of the game. The second i guess is the difference in hormones, which excite guys more to video games and less to girls, so they dont play as much.I beg to differ. My sister and I grew up spending hours a day playing games on our little Mac like Tetris, SimCity, SimLife, and Sim Theme Park. We really wanted a game system, but our parents said no, we already had a computer.Later, I played The Sims a lot, and when I started dating my current fiancee he introduced me to games like Diablo II and later, MMOs like World of Warcraft. I knew as many girls as boys that had game systems.I think there are two things going on. One, is that it seems like males get easily addicted to video games. I can play World of Warcraft for an hour and move on to something else, but I know men who play for hours at a time if they can get away with it.Another, is that the most heavily marketed video games are violent games marketed to teens and young men. This comes from popular advertising belief that men 18-34 is the most desirable audience, so the most advertised and most well known titles are the ones aimed at men. A girl watching TV is going to see ads for Halo 3, GTA, and maybe some craptacular Bratz game, and believe that there are no games she is interested in.However, the largest demographic of video game players is currently middle aged women, who play casual games or social games with chat rooms, like the Yahoo games. So generally speaking, women and men both like video games, but perhaps different ones.

  • girls like to do things in which they get something from it.
  • like shopping, being with boys, etc.
  • video games you don't usually get anything from, unless it's a competition against someone else.
    • traditionally, video games are by association linked with computers, which have been a "macho" thing free video poker game.
    • the tradition of sex-linked interests and pursuits still lingers to this day - i.e.
    • boys like playing "rough" games, while many girls still prefer more feminine activities.
    • how long this will last, i know not.
    • (personally, i think video games are a waste of time) crack video strip poker.

I guess it depends on their personality.Girls generally prefer more live interaction...Guys are more voyeristic....Prefer to fantasize.Generally speaking of course...I'm a mom of 3 and love video games. I have been playing since I got my Atari 2600 back in the 80's. I play all kinds of games. I play on PC, PlayStation 2, PSP, and Wii. I'm hoping there will be PS3 under the Christmas tree this year. I hope my husband reads this. : ) My oldest daughter who is 15 has never really cared for video games. My 7 and 6 year old daughters love the Wii and their Gamecube. Some girls love to play and some don't. Just like some guys love to play and some don't.ETA: Update. 15 year old daughter just came home from a friends house and has fallen in love with the Xbox 360 and Halo3. All this time we thought she didn't like video games but it was just a matter of having the right system for her. lol*Got to disagree with the guy below me about computers traditionally being a macho thing. Back in the early 80's (I was about 10 years old) I wanted an Apple Macintosh but alas, my parents weren't willing to spend ,000 dollars for my Christmas gift that year. So I got an Adam computer (ColecoVision) instead. That little system was kinda fun to program. Still would have rather had the mac though. : ) I think the reason some girls might not be into computers and to a lesser extent video games may be the interest in Math/Science which in the past has been considered more of a male subject, while females where always considered better in English/Literature. Luckily that is changing. There are now more female engineers and computer programmers than ever before. Fun Fact:The first computer programmer was a female named Ada Byron (1815-1852).
